Why You Have Fruit Flies & How to
Get Rid of Them

As a homeowner, you know that keeping your home pest-free is essential. But if you're dealing with an infestation of fruit flies, you may be wondering how to best address the problem. Pest control services can help provide relief from the annoyance of these flying insect invasions, but there are also some simple steps you can take to control fruit fly populations before they become a problem.

The Inside Scoop

Fruit flies are not necessarily dangerous, but they certainly are annoying. If they are not dealt with quickly, they can easily take over your home in no time. They repopulate quickly, and usually hide out of plain sight. They love dirty dishes in the sink, fruit that gets left out on the counter, and sticky spills that happen in your kitchen everyday.

Limit Food Supply

Fruit flies are attracted to ripe and rotten fruits and vegetables, often coming from markets, grocery stores, and other sources. These small insects breed quickly, so it’s important to be proactive about eliminating the sources of their food supply and keeping them away from your home.

Keep an Eye on Your Produce

Thoroughly clean your kitchen of any spoiled or overripe produce. Discard this food, or if need be, compost it in a secure container. Keeping a lid on your trash cans will also help prevent fruit flies from taking over your home.

Storage Containers

It may be a good idea to also invest in plastic mesh screen covers for your fruit bowls and other containers where fresh produce is stored. These covers will help keep the flies away while still allowing the fruit to breathe. Putting produce in your refrigerator or sealed containers can also help to limit the number of fruit flies in your home.

DIY Fly Traps

You can also employ the use of traps to attract the fruit flies to help rid your home of these persistent pests. Traps consist of a small container filled with a mixture of either wine, vinegar, and soap or some ripe fruit mixed with soap. The sweet smell of the mixture will draw the fruit flies in and the soap is sticky enough to trap them in the container.

Leave It to the Pros

If the methods above aren’t successful in completely eliminating your fruit fly population, you may need to consider turning to a professional pest control service for help. At Insight Pest Solutions, we can provide you with a comprehensive treatment plan to rid your home of fruit flies and other pests. One or two fruit flies here and there is nothing to worry about, but if they do not get taken care of, they will quickly grow to become a problem.

Take Your Home Back

Rather than dealing with the annoyance of fruit flies, you can take steps to control these pests and keep them from invading your home, or you can contact the experts in pest control at Insight Pest Solutions.
