DIY Mosquito Repellent

diy

Mosquitoes are many people’s least favorite bugs, especially during the summertime when they are running rampant. Mosquito bites can cause itching, swollen bumps and discomfort, but they can also spread deadly disease. No one wants to encounter mosquitoes when they’re outside, but some people attract them more than others due to a variety of factors such as scent, light, heat, and humidity.

If you’re a mosquito magnet, it’s important that you wear a mosquito repellent that can keep every species of mosquito away from you. But, even though they are effective, many repellents that you can get from the store are full of harmful chemicals. Luckily, there’s a better, more natural way to keep mosquitoes at bay – making your own mosquito repellent!

DIY mosquito repellents are easy to make and even easier to use. With a few simple ingredients, you can effectively keep mosquitoes away and avoid having itchy bumps all summer long. The secret is to find ingredients that work to naturally repel mosquitoes.

There are many household mosquito repellent recipes out there, but we figured we’d list some of our favorite ones below. Keep reading to learn how you can make DIY mosquito repellent!

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

Lemon eucalyptus is one of the many natural enemies of the mosquito. Mosquitoes don’t like the smell of the lemon eucalyptus plant, so having its scent on your skin will prevent mosquitoes from approaching you.

What You’ll Need

  • Spray Bottle
  • 10 mL Lemon Eucalyptus Oil
  • 90 mL of Carrier Oil, such as Olive Oil or Coconut Oil

How to Make It

  • Add the lemon eucalyptus oil to the spray bottle.
  • Add 90 mL of your carrier oil to the spray bottle and mix well.
  • Apply mixture directly to the skin and reapply as necessary outside. Avoid coming into contact with the eyes.

Peppermint Oil And Coconut Oil

Peppermint oil is another essential oil that naturally repels mosquitoes. It contains components, like menthol, that keep mosquitoes at bay. When it’s combined with coconut oil, which slows down evaporation, you get a long-lasting repellent that smells great.

What You’ll Need

  • Cosmetic Jar
  • 12 drops of peppermint oil
  • 30 mL of coconut oil

How to Make It

  • Melt coconut oil. Allow to cool slightly.
  • Mix peppermint oil with coconut oil.
  • Cool the mixture completely until hardened.
  • Apply mixture directly to the skin 2-3 times before leaving. Avoid coming into contact with the eyes.

Citronella Oil And Alcohol

Citronella is one of the most popular natural substances that people use to repel mosquitoes. It’s almost as effective as DEET and, when combined with alcohol, the properties of citronella increase to be even more effective.

What You’ll Need

  • Bowl
  • Spray Bottle
  • 10 mL of alcohol
  • 10 drops of citronella oil
  • 90 mL of water

How to Make It

  • Mix the alcohol and water in a bowl
  • To this mixture, add the citronella oil and mix well.
  • Put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray all over the body, reapplying as necessary. Avoid coming into contact with the eyes.

Lavender Oil, Vanilla, And Lemon Juice

No, you aren’t baking a delicious treat – all of these ingredients can be used to create an effective mosquito repellent! Lavender is soothing to us, but to mosquitoes, it’s a huge repelling agent. Additionally, vanilla and lemon juice have natural insect repellent properties, so when you combine all three, you’ll get a sweet smelling spray that will prevent mosquitoes from biting you.

What You’ll Need

  • Spray Bottle
  • 3-4 tablespoons of vanilla extract
  • 3-4 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 1-2 cups of water

How to Make It

  • Mix the lavender oil, vanilla extract, and lemon juice together in a spray bottle.
  • Add this mixture to 1-2 cups of water, depending on how thick you want the consistency to be.
  • Shake this solution well and spray it on your exposed body parts. Avoid coming into contact with the eyes.

As with all things, be sure to know how these DIY mosquito repellents will affect your skin. We recommend testing your creations on a patch of skin to see if you experience any irritation. Additionally, never apply essential oils directly to your skin.
