Are Flies in Your Home Dangerous? Here’s What You Need to Know

Screen Shot 2022-11-16 at 4.41.42 PM

Common house flies are incredibly annoying. We all know that they are spooked easily, and somewhat hard to get rid of. They buzz around your house, landing on everything from your kitchen counters to your dinner plate. Some will even land on your skin, which leaves most of us feeling dirty and uncomfortable in our own homes.

What’s worse is how gross they are. Everywhere flies land, they leave a trail of bacteria, spreading it all around your house.

Many people think that flies are simply a nuisance. But considering that they carry and spread bacteria around your home, it is important to reconsider your view of flies.

Identifiers

House flies are incredibly common. They are easy to identify, commonly seen as having dull, gray-colored bodies. Normally they have four black stripes down their bodies and have noticeably large, round, red eyes. While they are bigger than fruit flies and gnats, they are much smaller than horse flies.

Behavior

Once they make their way into your home, flies tend to spend most of their time near food sources. This makes your kitchen a great spot for them to hang out. They usually rest on ceilings, floors, and walls. House flies actually sleep at night just like we do, so their activity lessens at night. They feed on many different types of liquids and feces, and when they land on solid food, they actually vomit on it. The acid helps break down the integrity of solid food, making it digestible for the fly, and contaminating your food.

Dangers

Flies buzz around your house quickly all day long. The more they float around your home, the more bacteria they spread. Common house flies are responsible for many different diseases and illnesses like salmonella, typhoid, cholera, and even Giardia. Food poisoning can happen at any moment from flies continuously landing on your counters, food, or any other spots in your home.

Prevention

Flies do pose a danger to you and your home. Luckily, preventative measures are simple. Taking out the trash often, wiping down your kitchen to eliminate pools of liquid, keeping all food in sealed containers, sweeping and mopping floors, cleaning your dishes immediately after use, and getting the screens on your windows fixed or replaced are all simple ways to keep flies from invading your home.
