A Guide To The Flies Of Albuquerque And 5 Tips for Prevention

Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a beautiful city with a vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and a wide variety of pesky flies. Here is a formal guide on five types you should be aware of and some prevention tips.

House Flies

The house fly is one of the most recognizable and common flies any local would be familiar with. They can be seen buzzing about garbage cans and around your house. They are generally gray with four dark stripes running along the middle of its body. They are known for their quick wing beats and ability to spread disease.

Solutions: Make sure to keep a tidy house and don't leave out food. You should also use screens on your doors and windows to limit their entry into your home.

Fruit Flies

The fruit fly may be small, but can quickly become quite a nuisance around your home. These guys are typically found around fruit and vegetables. They are generally a light brown color with red eyes and are known for their attraction to fermented and sugary foods.

Solutions: Keep track of your fruits and veggies. It is a good idea to keep them in the refrigerator and dispose of them when they go bad.

Snipe Flies

Snipe flies are predatory creatures that tend to hunt smaller bugs. They can usually be found outdoors but are sure to be wherever their next meal is. They prefer dense foliage and are likelier to be in your yard than your home. They have long, slender legs and a long mouthpart, and they are most likely to be seen hovering in the sun.

Solutions: To keep these out of your house, simply ensure you don't have any other pest problems. Taking away their source of food will ensure they stay away from you.

Drain Flies

A drain fly is often mistaken for a moth due to its small furry body. They can be found around any damp area in your home. They are known for their slow wingbeats and like to rest on your walls or ceiling. They enjoy living around leaky faucets, sewer lines, and drains. They become a problem when your home has plumbing issues.

Solutions: Be sure to clean your pipes regularly and fix any leaks you notice. You can also eliminate any potential breeding sites by using a drain cleaner.

Blow flies

Also known as bottle flies, Blow flies are one of the larger flies you will encounter. They are known for their shiny metallic appearance and are larger than a house fly. They are attracted to decomposing things such as dead animals and any compost lying around.

Solutions: Be sure to seal your garbage tightly and promptly remove any dead animals that could be in your area.
