6 Ways to Prevent Ants from
Taking Over Your Kitchen

Ants are one of the most common household pests, and they can be very difficult to get rid of once they've taken up residence in your kitchen. If you're dealing with an ant infestation, or if you just want to prevent one from happening in the first place, here are 10 ways to keep them out of your kitchen:

1. Keep your counters and floors clean.

Food residues such as crumbs and spills attract ants, so it's important to keep your kitchen surfaces clean. Wipe up spills immediately, and sweep or vacuum regularly. Clean crumbs and other debris from underneath appliances and in other hard-to-reach places.

2. Seal food tight!

To keep ants from taking over your kitchen, make sure all of the foods, including pet food, are sealed tightly. Store food inside airtight containers. Anything stored improperly will surely draw the attention of ants. If you have a problem with ants getting into food packages, try storing them in the fridge or freezer.

3. Don't leave food out.

Ants are persistent little creatures! They will follow any food source they can find, which means you should keep your kitchen as clean and tidy as much as possible. The best way to do this? Don’t leave anything out on display - whether it stays on your table or counter, make sure to clean up meals quickly after everyone is done eating.

4. Keep trash cans clean and sealed.

Garbage is an ant's number friend, so it's important to keep your trash can clean and free of food residue. Wipe down the inside of the trash can regularly, and make sure the lid fits snugly so that ants can't get in. Take the trash out regularly, and don't let it overflow or sit in your house for long. Doing so will only attract more ants.

5. Get rid of moisture.

Ants are attracted to moisture, so it's important to keep your kitchen as dry as possible. Wipe up any water spills immediately, and fix any leaks or drips. Use a dehumidifier if necessary to keep the air in your kitchen free of moisture.

6. Don't leave dishes in the sink.

Again, ants are attracted to food residues and moisture, so if you leave dirty dishes in the sink, they'll be more likely to come into your kitchen. Wash your dishes as soon as you're done using them.
